Proton re-interviews staff about AI use as apology and denials follow

Proton will re-interview selected staff about how they use AI at work between 4 and 11 November 2026. This comes from an internal email reported by 404 Media and covered by TechRadar on 27 October. The email calls the interviews "consequential" and says the results may affect roles, responsibilities and "continued employment". Proton says this is not a cover for layoffs.

The reports follow a 404 Media investigation published on 29 October. It cited eight current employees and one former employee, and described software that measures how much code is written by AI on staff computers. On Friday 30 October, Proton's official X account apologised for not meeting expectations. It denied installing monitoring software on employee computers and called the issue a misunderstanding of mobile device management (MDM) tools. Proton also promised to publish its internal AI rules as open source and to release new versions of its Lumo assistant. The day before, CEO Andy Yen had explained on Reddit that his remarks had been taken out of context.

Frandroid reports that many users announced on social media that they were cancelling paid subscriptions. The reports we reviewed do not concern the logging policy of Proton VPN.
