The Safing Privacy Network (SPN) is the tunnelling layer built into the Portmaster application by the Austrian company Safing. It is not a classic VPN: Safing describes it as "a secure overlay network similar to Tor", which routes connections through several servers with onion encryption (multi-hop). Not all of these servers are run by Safing; some are operated by the community.
Plan and price. The SPN is only included in the Portmaster Pro tier: unknown per month or unknown per year, for use on up to unknown devices. There is no free plan and no free trial for the SPN; Portmaster's local privacy features stay free. New orders carry a 14-day statutory cancellation period; per the terms, services already used and an account administration fee are deducted from refunds.
Paying with crypto. Safing accepts Bitcoin (BTC) and Monero (XMR), next to credit card, PayPal and cash. Sign-up needs only a username; an email address is optional, though some payment methods require one.
Logging. The privacy policy states: "We do not log or store records on user activity using our SPN Service, we are committed to your privacy and DO NOT collect or log browsing history, traffic destination, data content, IP addresses, or DNS queries from Subscribers connected to our SPN." This has not been confirmed by an independent no-logs audit; an external Cure53 audit covered Safing's cryptographic library, not the logging practice. Payment records are kept for tax reasons beyond account deletion.
Platforms and features. Portmaster with SPN runs on Windows and Linux; macOS and mobile apps are not available. The apps are open source. Features include a kill switch (traffic is blocked if the SPN drops), split tunnelling, multi-hop routing, an ad blocker and DNS/IPv6 leak protection. Server countries are only shown on the in-app SPN map. Support is by email.
