Shellfire VPN is a VPN service from the German provider Shellfire that accepts cryptocurrency next to conventional payment methods. Its own apps cover Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, and the app lets you switch between WireGuard and OpenVPN. One contract can be used on up to 5 simultaneous connections. Servers are listed in countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and Oceania, including the US, the UK and Germany.
Prices and payment. The monthly plan costs 10.95 EUR per month; the 12-month plan is billed at 59.95 EUR per year, and the longest term works out to 3.33 EUR per month. Shellfire's FAQ lists Bitcoin, Ethereum, Monero and Zcash among the accepted cryptocurrencies; card, PayPal and bank transfer are also offered. There is a free plan with limited speed. There is no free trial, but paid plans come with a 14-day money-back guarantee on top of the statutory right of withdrawal under German consumer law.
Privacy. Sign-up requires an email address. The privacy policy states: "Im Rahmen der Nutzung unserer VPN Dienste werden keinerlei personenbezogenen Daten (z.B. IP-Adressen) gespeichert." (no personal data such as IP addresses is stored while using the VPN). For registration, logins and use of the online services (account and website), however, Shellfire stores the IP address and the time of the action, and the retention period for these records is not published. Payment records are kept for the statutory retention periods. Sending app log files to support is voluntary (opt-in). The no-logs claim has not been confirmed by an independent audit or a public case, the servers are not described as RAM-only, and the client apps are not open source.
